Ultrasound Examination

Preparation

Abdomen

(Paediatrics ≤ 8 years – 4 hours fast)

  • Fast for a minimum of 6 hours prior, but preferably 8 hours (usually withhold breakfast
  • Please do not smoke, consume dairy or chew gum during fasting.
  • Patients may drink fluids such as water, black tea or black coffee only.
  • Medications can be taken as normal so long as it does not require food to be taken with it. Only have small sips of water for any medication that you may be taking.
  • Please bring any relevant previous imaging/reports to your appointment
  • Procedure will take approximately 20-30 minutes.
Pelvis  
  • Patients require a full bladder, and must finish drinking 1 litre of water (not coffee or tea), 1 hour prior to their appointment time and hold (Do NOT empty your bladder until after the examination.).
  • Please bring any relevant previous imaging/reports to the appointment.
  • Procedure will take approximately 20-30 minutes.
Renal

Renal Doppler

Obstetric Dating Scan (7-11 weeks)
  • Patients require a full bladder and must finish drinking 1 litre of water 1 hour prior to their appointment time and hold (do not go to the toilet).
  • Procedure will take approximately 20 – 30 minutes.
Obstetrics 1st Trimester Screening/Nuchal Translucency (12 weeks)
  • Patients require a full bladder and must finish drinking 1 litre of water 1 hour prior to their appointment time and hold (do not go to the toilet).
  • Procedure will take approximately 20 minutes.
Obstetric Anatomy Scan (17-22 weeks)

2nd Trimester Pregnancy

  • Our sonographers prefer to perform this scan at 19 weeks gestation.
  • Patients are required to finish drinking 2-3 glasses of water 30 minutes prior to their appointment time and hold (do not go to the toilet).
  • Only one of these scans between 17 – 22 weeks gestation referred by a GP can be bulk billed for each pregnancy.
  • Procedure will take approximately 40 – 60 minutes.
